How much does a custom small-business website cost?

Most projects land between $2,500 and $6,500. Three published tiers, each with a timeline.

A short answer

Most projects land between $2,500 and $6,500. There are three published tiers, each with a page count and a timeline. Every project is quoted exactly after we talk, but this is the range to plan for.

One builder does the work. Prices are on the site. There is no retainer.

Foundation — $2,500

Built for trades and single-location shops.

  • Up to 5 pages
  • You supply the copy; we structure it
  • Contact and quote forms
  • Google Business setup
  • About three weeks

If the phone ringing is the point and you already know what the pages should say, this is usually enough. More on that for HVAC, plumbing, and electrical on the trades answer.

Standard — $4,200

Built for practices, firms, and multi-service businesses. Most projects land here.

  • Up to 10 pages
  • We write the pages with you
  • Online booking or scheduling
  • Staff and service pages
  • Four to five weeks

Full build — $6,500+

Built for retail, catalogs, and work that has to talk to other software.

  • As many pages as the work needs
  • Payments or online ordering
  • Software integrations
  • A content system you can edit
  • Six weeks and up

Replacing a site you already have

A rebuild is priced from the same three tiers — replacing a site costs about what building one costs. The extra work is moving content, mapping old addresses to new ones, and not throwing away the URLs search engines already know. That work is included, up to the page count of the tier.

Sometimes the honest answer is a smaller job than a rebuild. Refresh versus rebuild is its own page.

What it costs after launch

The site is yours the day it ships. Running it still costs what it costs anyone. A domain renews at roughly $15 a year. Hosting runs anywhere from free for a simple site to about $25 a month once you add booking, payments, or a content system. Those accounts are in your name. You pay the registrar and the host directly.

If you’d rather not deal with it, optional help exists: hosting and security at $45 a month (hosting, SSL, backups, uptime monitoring, and security updates); full care at $145 a month (all of that plus an hour of changes each month and priority turnaround). Anything beyond a plan, or without one, is $95 an hour.

Both plans are optional. Plenty of people host it themselves and ask for help only when something needs doing. There is no retainer either way, and nothing owed to keep the site up. Domain and hosting always cost something — even when you run those accounts yourself.

What the price is not

It is not a monthly design subscription. It is not a theme plus a page-builder license. And it is not “free after launch.” A website has a domain and a host. Those bills exist whether a studio is involved or not. Custom, not a template explains the construction difference.
